Generative AI search optimization means making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and mention when people ask about your services. You may also see it called GEO or AEO. They describe the same goal.
For a service business, it starts with the basics: clear pages about what you do and where, answers to real customer questions, and a website that search tools are allowed to read.
How AI search finds a business
Tools like ChatGPT and Google’s AI search read websites before they answer. If they cannot reach your pages, or your pages do not say clearly what you do, you are easy to leave out.
Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search to appear as a link in its AI features. ChatGPT search uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. Sites that block it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.
Four things to do first
1. One clear page per service. Say what you do, who it is for and which cities you serve. “We repair and replace water heaters in Rockville, Bethesda and Silver Spring” is easier to use than “quality solutions for your home.”
2. Answer the questions customers ask. How long does the job take? What does it cost to start? Do you offer a free inspection? Put short, honest answers on the page.
3. Keep your business details consistent. Use the same name, phone and service area on your website and your Google Business Profile.
4. Let search tools read your site. Check that your robots.txt does not block Google or OAI-SearchBot. Blocking GPTBot, which OpenAI uses for model training, is a separate choice and does not remove you from ChatGPT search.
A simple example
Someone asks an AI tool: “Who can replace my water heater in Rockville?” A company with a Rockville service page, clear next steps and a working phone number gives the tool something specific to cite. A company with one general page about “home services” gives it very little.
This is an illustration, not a client result. AI answers change, and no one controls them.
What it can and cannot promise
Good work makes your business easier to find and understand. It cannot guarantee that an AI tool will recommend you, or that it will do so every time.
Measure what you can: whether your business appears for a fixed set of customer questions, visits from AI tools to your website, and calls and form requests.
Quick answers
Is generative AI search optimization different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. Google says its usual SEO practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. The difference is the focus on clear answers that an AI tool can quote.
Do I need special AI files or schema?
No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special structured data to appear in its AI features.
How do I know if AI tools mention my business?
Ask a few questions your customers would ask, in more than one AI tool, and note who is named. Our free report does this for a defined set of questions about your services.
